Hyper-pigmentation occurs when the skin produces more melanin, the pigment that gives skin its colour. This can make brown spots on the skin appear darker than surrounding areas.
Hyper-pigmentation is a common skin condition. It affects people of all skin types and any age.
Some forms of hyper-pigmentation, including melasma, freckles and sun spots, are more likely to affect areas of skin that get the most sun exposure, including the face, arms, and legs.
Sunspots, age spots and freckles can be removed safely and non – invasively with pigment lasers.
The laser works by heating the pigmented area and causes the pigment to shatter. The action of the laser draws the pigment to the surface. There is no harm to surrounding non – pigmented tissue. The pigmented lesion fades and dries, flaking off from the treated area of skin. Once the area has been treated and healed the patient is left with skin which has a more even tone.
Pigment lasers can be used to treat:
Pigment laser treatment is generally not too painful and there is only a low level of discomfort during the treatment. Crusting and scabbing of sun spots can occur for 7 to 10 days post treatment. The expected down time is 7-14 days.
